Commissioner Bill Bryant’s comments on behalf of the Seaport Alliance regarding honor from the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce
Tonight at the LeMay Car Museum, Commissioner Bill Bryant’s comments upon accepting the 2015 Regional Impact Award from the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce with Commissioner Don Johnson (Pierce Co) on behalf of the Seaport Alliance.
Many challenges confront our state.
How we respond to these challenges will determine whether we keep family wage jobs here in WA.
If we cling to the old ways of doing things and defend outdated institutions, we’ll lose jobs.
The port commissioners in King and Pierce counties recognized global competition was challenging us at an accelerating pace, and realized if we didn’t change, family wage jobs would leave our state.
So we set aside a century of history and transformed our government to keep jobs here.
We consolidated operations and built the third largest trade gateway in North America: 1. LA/Long Beach, 2. NY/NJ, and 3. Puget Sound.
This honor recognizes that willingness to reinvent ourselves, it recognizes our willingness to set aside the old ways and modernize to meet the needs of our time.
Thank you for recognizing the positive impact this transformation could have on our community.
We look forward to working in partnership with you to keep jobs here.
